Music video project

                    Music video project

For the last week and a half in class we have been working on our final project of the semester: A music video. Creating a music video from scratch proved to be quite the challenge. The overall process of it was very long however it was super fun (some of it atleast). The project itself you could break off into 4 different parts:

Script writing/planning:

The first part of the project was rather straight forward, we were simply instructed to choose a Christmas song that we would like a music video for. To be honest this was rather easy, my group mates and I almost immediately decided upon the song "I'll be home for Christmas" - Bryson Tiller. After we decided on the song we faced a new conundrum: script writing. The process for script writing objectively isn't hard, simply write out the pathway for your music video, however, this didn't go that smoothly. This is was a semi-difficult task as we didn't quite know what we wanted to do yet in the video. This was short-lived however as we ended up with a few ideas which we wrote down. This overall was a 2 day process of jotting down ideas and finally stumbling across our final plans for the music videos.

Story boarding:

The story board process for our group was actually really easy, my group members including myself are very creative individuals so bring the script we created to life proved to be rather simple. We all had sort of the same ideas as we were fresh out of the process of creating the script so our brains were still flowing and thinking creatively from that. We finished the story board in the classroom which was very convenient as we had time spare.

Filming:

The filming process of this was all extremely fun, this was a 2 day long process in which we enacted the scenes we created on the story board. Within the first day of filming my group already got up to our last shot of 7 which is very good, however tragedy struck in the form of me finding myself sick the next morning resulting in me not being able to go to school the next day. This ended up halting my group from filming the rest as I was the main focus of the last shot. Of course, this didn't set us back pace really at all because of how ahead we were due to finishing the whole planning period early and the amount of shots we already completed the first day of filming. The second day of filming was very simple as we only had one shot to complete. We ended up finishing the shot pretty earlier as we only had a single 15 second shot left.

The filming was very simple and fun however it didn't go without its challenges: We were filmed in a hallway for a majority of our shots so there was constant traffic and random people in our shots. This was a very minute problem though as we could simply just reshoot. The real problems didn't surface till the last days of editing.

Editing:

I was tasked with the job of editing all of our shots together for the group and adding a few transition. On paper this is extremely simple and straight-forward: I have vast experiencing in editing as I used to work on mini editing projects in the form of making YouTube videos. (Though I've never done anything close to incorporating music and such) The process of putting the clips that we gathered was simple, however tragedy struck when we went to add the music over it all.

Immediately we noticed that the song does not sync up with the clips we had. To be honest, this was a head scratcher as we made sure for every shot we played the song audio from our phones to gage how much time we needed to incorporate the lyric so seeing how delayed our video turned out was very peculiar. We ended up cutting out some parts of our video and song as well as reshooting a whole shot to fit the video. Finally on the last day of the school week (Friday) we finally got everything to match up perfectly.

Reflection

The overall experience of this was very new and refreshing. We've done projects in class before this one was truly fun for me. It did end up having some blocks in the road, but I feel like this made it even more fun. Through this process of creating the music video I feel like I've grown as an editor and further understand how to use camera angles and shot timing to my advantage to create beautiful pieces of work. The result of our around 5 days of work proved to be very nice and clean, when you watch the video we created or any video for that matter you never anticipate how much time were put into creating them and I feel like I finally understand that now after embarking on this journey.

The final result:
